Formulas for Sedation

Those formulas are used as sedatives and tranquilizers that treat emotional distress and morbid fear and distrust.

1.   Sedative recipes with heavy materials 

The formulas are mainly composed of heavy materials used as sedatives 

1.1 Sedative bolus of cinnabar (Zhusha Anshen Wan)

Ingredients:

Cinnabar (Zhusha) 15g

Coptis (Huanglian) 18g

Angelica (Danggui) 8g

Dry rehmannia (Shengdihuang) 8g

Prepared licorice (Zhigancao) 16g

Function: Relieving palpitation, tranquillizing the mind, 

Indication:  Disturbance of the mind by the flaring up of fire due to deficiency of yin and blood 

Precaution: Cinnabar (Zhusha) containing mercuric sulfide can not be taken in large dosage or for a long time using

2. Sedative recipes with tonic drugs

Those formulas are mainly composed of tonic herbs for nourishing yin and blood for tranquillizing the mind.

2.1 Wild jujube seed decoction (Suanzaoren Tang)

Ingredients:

Wild jujube seed (Suanzaoren) 18g 

Chuanxiong 3g

Poria (Fuling) 6g

Anemarrhena (Zhimu) 6g

Prepared licorice (Zhigancao) 3g

Function:  Nourishing the blood and tranquillizing the mind 

Indication:  Disturbance of the mind by hyperactivity of liver yang due to deficiency of blood 

2.2 Cardio-tonic pill (Tianwang Buxin Tang)

Ingredients:

Dry rehmannia (Shengdihuang) 12g

Ginseng (Renshen) 15g

Schisandra fruit (Wuweizi) 15g

Platycodon (Jiegeng) 15g

Asparagus root (Tianmendong) 60g

Ophiopogon root (Maimendong) 60

Wild jujube seed (Suanzaoren) 60g

Red sage root (Danshen) 15g

Angelica (Danggui) 60g

Poria (Fuling) 15g

Polygala root (Yuanzhi)15g

Biota seed (Baiziren) 60g 

Function:  Nourishing the blood and yin, tonify heart and tranquillizing the mind

Indication:  Disturbance of the mind by deficiency of blood and yin
