Formulas for Tonifying

1.   Recipes for tonifying qi   

1.1 Decoction of four noble drugs (Sijunzi Tang)  

Ingredients:

Ginseng (Renshen) 10g

Bighead atractylodes (Baizhu) 9g 

Poria (Baishao) 9g

Licorice (Gancao) 6g

Function:  Tonifying qi and strengthening spleen   

Indication: Spleen qi deficiency  

1.2. Powder of ginseng, poria and bighead atractylodes (Shen Ling Baizhu San)

Ingredients:

Ginseng (Renshen) 1000g

Bighead atractylodes (Baizhu) 1000g 

Poria (Fuling) 1000g

Lotus seed (Lianzi) 500g

Coix seed (Yiyiren) 500g

Amomum fruit (Sharen) 500g

Platycodon root (Jiegeng) 6g

Licorice (Gancao) 1000g

White hyachiath bean (Baibiandou) 750g

Chinese yam (Shanyao) 1000g

Function:  Tonifying qi and strengthening spleen  

Indication: Spleen qi deficiency

1.3 Decoction for reinforcing middle-warmers and replenishing qi (Buzhong Yiqi Tang)

Ingredients:

Astragalus (Huangqi) 15g

Angelica (Danggui) 10g

Ginseng (Renshen) 10g

Bighead atractylodes (Baizhu) 10g  

Licorice (Gancao) 5g

Tangerine peel (Chenpi) 6g

Cimicifuga (Shengma) 3g

Bupleurum (Chaihu) 3g

Function:  Tonifying qi and strengthening spleen to treat qi collapse  

Indication: Qi collapse due to spleen qi deficiency

1.4 Pulse-activating powder (Shengmai San)

Ingredients:

Ginseng (Renshen) 10g

Ophiopogon (Maimendong) 15g

Schisandra (Wuweizi) 6g

Function:  Tonifying qi and yin   

Indication:  Qi and yin deficiency

2.  Recipes for tonifying blood

2.1 Decoction of four ingredients (Siwu Tang)

Ingredients:

Angelica (Danggui) 10g

White peony (Baishao) 12g

Prepared rehmannia (Shudihuang) 12g

Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong) 8g

Function:  Tonifying blood   

Indication: Blood deficiency

2.2 Decoction for invigorating the spleen and nourishing the heart (Guipi Tang)

Ingredients:

Astragalus (Huangqi) 30g

Ginseng (Renshen) 15g

Bighead atractylodes (Baizhu) 30g 

Poria (Fuling) 30g

Longan aril (Longyanrou) 30g

Angelica (Danggui) 3g

Licorice (Gancao) 8g

Aucklandia root (Muxiang) 15g

Polygala root (Yuanzhi) 3g

Wild jujube seed (Suanzaoren) 30g

Function:  Tonifying blood and qi   

Indication: Blood and qi of heart and spleen deficiency

2.3 Decoction of prepared licorice (Zhi Gancao Tang)

Ingredients:

Licorice (Gancao) 12g

Ginseng (Renshen) 6g

Dry rehmannia (Shengdihuang) 30g

Cinnamon twig (Guizhi) 9g

Fresh ginger (Shengjiang) 9g

Donkey-hide gelatin (E Jiao) 6g

Ophiopogon (Maimendong) 10g

Hemp seed (Maren) 10g

Chinese Dates (Dazao)10g

Function:  Tonifying blood and qi to restore pulse    

Indication: Intermittent pulse due to blood and qi deficiency

3. Recipes for tonifying yin

3.1 Bolus of six drugs including rehmannia (Liuwei Dihuang Wan)

Ingredients:

Prepared Rehmannia (Shudihuang) 240g

Dogwood fruit (Shanzhuyu) 120g

Dried Chinese yam (Shanyao) 120g

Oriental water plantain (Zexie) 90g  

Poria (Fuling) 90g

Peony bark (Mudanpi)90g

Function:  Tonifying yin   

Indication: Kidney yin deficiency

3.2 Bolus for replenishing vital essence (Da Buyin Wan)

Ingredients:

Phellodendron bark (Huangbai) 120

Anemarrhena (Zhimu) 120g

Prepared rehmannia 180g

Tortoise plastron (Guiban) 180g

Function:  Tonifying yin and clearing away heat 

Indication: heat due to yin deficiency

3.3 Bolus as kidney-yin-tonic (Zuogui Wan)

Ingredients:

Prepared rehmannia (Shudihuang) 240g

Dogwood fruit (Shanzhuyu) 120g

Dried Chinese yam (Shanyao) 120g

Wolfberry fruit (Gouqizi) 120g

Cyathula root (Chuanniuxi) 90g

Dodder seed (Tusizi) 120g

Antler glue (Lujiao) 120g 

Tortoise plastron glue (Guibanjiao) 120g

Function:  Tonifying yin and strengthening kidney    

Indication: Kidney yin deficiency

3.4 Decoction for nourishing the liver and kidney (Yiguan Jian)

Ingredients:

Glehnia root (Shashen) 10g

Ophiopogon (Maimendong) 10g

Angelica (Danggui) 10g

Wolfberry fruit (Gouqizi) 10g

Dry rehmannia (Shengdihuang) 30g

Sichuan chinaberry (Chuanlianzi) 5g

Function:  Tonifying yin, smoothing liver qi    

Indication: Liver qi hyperactivity due to yin deficiency

4. Recipes as yang-tonics 

Bolus for tonifying the kidney-qi (Shenqi Wan)

Ingredients:

Cinnamon bark (Rougui) 30g

Prepared aconite root (Fuzi) 30g

Prepared rehmannia (Shudihuang) 240g

Dogwood fruit (Shanzhuyu) 120g

Dried Chinese yam (Shanyao) 120g

Oriental water plantain (Zexie) 90g   

Poria (Fuling) 90g

Peony bark (Mudanpi) 90g

Function:  Tonifying yang

Indication: Kidney yang deficiency
