 Formulas for Purgation

 1.  Recipes of cold nature  

1.3 Major decoction for purging down digestive qi (Da Chengqi Tang)

Ingredients:

Rhubarb (Dahuang) 12g

Magnolia bark (Houpo) 24g

Immature bitter orange (Zhishi) 12g

Mirabilite (Mangxiao) 6g 

Function: Strongly expelling pathogenic heat and loosening the bowels, promoting the circulation of qi to purge accumulation in the bowels  

Indication: Excessive heat syndrome manifested as constipation, fever, abdominal pain, distension and fullness, sensitivity to pressure on abdomen, yellow, thick and dry tongue coating   

1.2  Minor decoction for purging down digestive qi (Xiao Chengqi Tang)

Rhubarb (Dahuang) 12g

Magnolia bark (Houpo) 6g

Immature bitter orange (Zhishi) 12g

Function: Expelling pathogenic heat and loosening the bowels, promoting the circulation of qi to purge accumulation in the bowels

Indication: The same as the above, heat less

1.3  Decoction for purging down digestive qi and regulating stomach (Tiaowei Chengqi Tang)

Rhubarb (Dahuang) 12g

Mirabilite (Mangxiao) 10g 

Licorice (Gancao) 6g

Function: Mildly expelling pathogenic heat and loosening the bowels, promoting the circulation of qi to purge accumulation in the bowels   

Indication: The same as above, but both heat and distension of abdomen less

 2. Purgative recipes of warming nature

Decoction of rhubarb and aconite (Dahuang Fuzi Tang)

Ingredients:

Rhubarb (Dahuang) 12g

Aconite (Danggui) 9g

Asarum herb (Xixin) 3g  

Function: Warming yang and dispelling pathogenic, relieving constipation and promoting the circulation of qi 

Indication: Excessive interior cold syndrome manifested as constipation,  fever, abdominal pain, distension and fullness,  sensitivity to pressure on abdomen, yellow, thick and dry tongue coating 

 

Hemp seed pill (Maziren Wan)

Ingredients:

Hemp seed (Maziren) 500g

White peony root (Baishao) 250g

Immature bitter orange (Zhishi) 250g

Rhubarb (Dahuang) 500g

Magnolia bark (Houpo) 250g

Apricot kernel (Xingren) 250g

Function: Moistening the intestines to relieve constipation

Indication: Constipation due to intestine dry syndrome, yin deficiency and habitual constipation

4. Recipe for eliminating retained fluid

Ten Chinese-dates decoction (Shouzao Tang)

Ingredients:

Kansui Root (Kansui)

Knoxia Root (Daji)

Genkwa  Flower (Yuanhua)

All the above drugs should be equal in dosage 

Function: Drastically expelling the excessive fluid

Indication: Excessive fluid syndrome manifested as effusion and edema 

5.  Recipes for both reinforcement and elimination 

Decoction of yellow dragon with supplements (Xinjia Huanglong Tang)

Ingredients:

Rehmannia (Shengdihuang) 15g

Licorice (Gancao) 6g

Ginseng (Renshen) 4.5g

Rhubarb (Dahuang) 9g

Mirabilite (Mangxiao) 9g 

Scrophularia root (Xuanseng) 15g

Ophiopogon root (Maidong) 15g

Angelica (Danggui) 4.5

Sea cucumber (Haishen) 2 pieces

Ginger juice (Shengjiang) 6 spoonfuls

Function: Nourishing yin and qi, expelling pathogenic heat and loosening the bowels   

Indication: Excessive heat and the deficiency of vital qi and yin syndrome manifested as constipation, abdominal pain, distension and fullness,  fatigue, shortness of breath, dryness of the mouth and throat,   yellow, thick and dry tongue coating
