Formulas for relieving exterior syndrome

1.  Pungent and warm recipes for relieving exterior syndrome

1.1 Ephedra decoction (Mahuang Tang)

Ingredients:

Ephedra (Mahuang) 6g

Cinnamon twig (Guizhi) 4g

Bitter apricot kernel (Xingren) 9g

Prepared licorice root (Gancao) 3g

Function: Inducing sweat to relieve exterior syndrome, facilitating the flow of the lung-qi to relieve asthma

Indication: Excess wind-cold exterior syndrome

Fever, aversion cold, non-sweating, headache and body pain, cough and asthma

Precaution: deficiency syndrome

1.2 Cinnamon twig decoction (Guizhi Tang)

Ingredients:

Cinnamon twig (Guizhi) 9g

Peony (Baishao) 9g

Prepared licorice root (Gancao) 6g

Fresh ginger (Shengjiang) 9g

Chinese Dates (Dazao) 4

Function: Inducing sweat to relieve exterior syndrome, regulating ying and wei

Indication: Excess wind-cold exterior syndrome

Fever, mild aversion cold, sweating, headache and body pain,

Precaution: deficiency syndrome

1.3 Notopterygium decoction of nine ingredients (Jiuwei Qianghuo Tang)

Ingredients:

Notopterygium (Qainghuo) 6g

Ledebouriella (Fangfeng) 6g

Atractylodes (Zangzu) 6g

Asarum (Xinxi) 2g

Chuanxiong 3g

Dahurian angelica (Baizhi) 3g

Rehmannia (Shengdihuang) 3g

Scutellaria (Huangqin) 3g

Prepared licorice root (Gancao) 3g

Function: Inducing sweat to relieve exterior syndrome, clearing interior heat, stopping pain

Indication: Excess wind-cold exterior and internal changing into heat syndrome

Fever, slight aversion cold, non-sweating, headache and body pain, cough and asthma, thirsty, tongue tip red with thin yellow fur, rapid pulse

Precaution: deficiency syndrome

1.4 Minor decoction of green dragon

Ingredients:

Ephedra (Mahuang) 9g

Cinnamon twig (Guizhi) 6g

Peony (Baishao) 9g

Asarum (Xinxi) 3g

Dry ginger (Ganjiang) 3g

Prepared licorice root (Gancao) 6g

Pinellia (Banxia) 9g

Schisandra fruit (Wuweizi) 3g

Function: Inducing sweat to relieve exterior syndrome, facilitating the flow of the lung-qi to relieve asthma

Indication: Excess wind-cold exterior and cold liquid stagnation syndrome

Fever, aversion to cold, cough or asthma with profuse watery white phlegm

Precaution: deficiency syndrome

2.  Pungent and cold recipes for relieving exterior syndrome

2.1 Powder of honeysuckle flower and forsythia  (Yinqiao San)

Ingredients:

Honeysuckle flower (Jinyin Hua)9g

Forsythia root (Lianqiao)  9g

Peppermint (Bohe) 6g

Schizonepeta spike  (Jingjie) 5g

Prepared soybean (Douzhi) 5g

Arctium fruit (Niupangzi) 9g

Platycodon root (Jiegeng) 6g 

Licorice root (Gancao) 5g

Bomboo leaf (Zhuye) 4g

Reed rhizome (Lugen) 9g

Function: Pungent and cool to relieve exterior syndrome and clear heat and toxic 

Indication: Excess wind-heat exterior syndrome

Precaution: Not be decocted long

2.2 Decoction of mulberry leaf and chrysanthemum (Sangju Yin)

Ingredients:

Mulberry leaf (Sangye) 8g

Chrysanthemum (Jiuhua) 5g

Bitter apricot (Xingren) 6g

Forsythia root (Lianqiao)  5g

Peppermint (Bohe) 3g

Platycodon root (Jiegeng) 6g 

Licorice root (Gancao) 3g

Reed rhizome (Lugen) 9g

Function: Pungent and cool to relieve exterior syndrome, smoothing lung-qi to stop cough

Indication: Excess wind-heat exterior syndrome in the onset often with cough

Precaution: Not be decocted long

2.3 Bupleurum and Pueraria decoction for dispelling pathogens from superficial muscles  (Chai Ge Jieji Tang)

Ingredients:

Bupleurum (Caihu) 9g

Pueraria (Gegen) 9g

Scutellaria (Huangqin) 9g

Licorice root (Gancao) 3g

Peony root (Baishao) 3

Notopterygium root (Qianghuo) 3g

Dahurian angelica (Baizhi) 3g

Platycodon root (Jiegeng) 3g 

Gypsum (Shigao) 9g

Fresh ginger (Shengjiang) 3 slice

Chinese date (Dazao) 2pcs  

Function: Expelling pathogenic factors form the muscles and skin and reducing fever

Indication: Excess wind-heat exterior syndrome, especially with ache and fever

3. Recipes for strengthening the body resistance and relieving exterior syndrome

Anti-pathologistic  Powder (Baidu San)

Ingredients:

Bupleurum (Caihu) 30g

Root of purple-flowered peucedanum (Qianhu) 30g

Ligustici (Changxiong) 30g

Fruit of immature bitter orange (Zhishi) 30g

Notopterygium root (Qianghuo) 30g

Pubescent angelica root (Duhuo) 30

Poria (Fuling) 30

Platycodon root (Jiegeng) 30g

Ginseng (Renshen) 30g

Licorice root (Gancao) 15g

Function: Relieving the exterior syndrome by replenishing qi and dispelling pathogenic wind and dampness

Indication: Excess wind-cold-damp exterior syndrome with qi deficiency

Precaution: Not suitable for wind-heat
