 The Outline of TCM Formula

 1. Formation of a Formula

1.1 The principle of a formula

Principal drug: Treating the cause or the main symptom

Assistant drug: Assisting the principal drug; Treating the accompany symptoms

Adjuvant drug: Assisting the principal and assistant drugs; reducing the toxic and side effect of the principal and assistant drugs

Guiding drug: Leading the other drugs to certain channels; mediating other drugs

3 Therapeutic methods

Therapeutic methods: They are the specific treating techniques and subordinate to the general principle.

3.1 Diaphoresis

It treats diseases with proper diaphoretics to disperse and relieve the exterior pathogens, mainly for the exterior syndromes and also for the early stage of wind edema, skin and external diseases such as sores and carbuncle.

3.2 Emesis

It is a therapeutic method to expel phlegm, saliva, undigested food or toxic substances that retain in the throat, thoracic cavity or stomach.

3.3 Purgation

It is a therapeutic method to promote BM that discharge of indigestive food, dry stool, cold accumulation, stagnant blood, phlegm and water retaining in the stomach and the intestines to clear up the stomach and intestines. 

3.4 Mediation

It is a therapeutic method that eliminates pathogenic factors by way of mediation or regulation, and is mostly used to treat halt-exterior and half-internal syndrome.

3.5 Warming

The treatment is to warm the middle-jiao, dispel pathogenic cold and help recover yang, remove obstruction in the channels and collaterals and regulate the blood vessels by getting rid of cold, recuperating the depleted yang and activating the channels and collaterals.

3.6 Heat-reducing

The treatment removes pathogenic heat and fire.  Its functions are antisepsis, relieving inflammation and reducing fever.

3.7 Elimination

It is a therapeutic method that gradually eliminates the tangible lumps formed by the accumulation and stagnation of qi, blood, phlegm, retained food, water, worm and the like by promoting digestion and removing stagnation as well as resolving masses and dissolving lumps.
