The Outline of TCM Formula 1. Formation of a Formula 1.1 The principle of a formula Principal drug: Treating the cause or the main symptom Assistant drug: Assisting the principal drug; Treating the accompany
symptoms Adjuvant drug: Assisting the principal and assistant drugs; reducing the
toxic and side effect of the principal and assistant drugs Guiding drug: Leading the other drugs to certain channels; mediating other
drugs 1.2 Modification of a formula (1) Modification
of herbs (2) Modification
of doses (3) Modification
of preparation of the herbs 3 Therapeutic methods Therapeutic methods: They are the specific treating techniques and
subordinate to the general principle. 3.1 Diaphoresis It treats diseases with proper diaphoretics to disperse and relieve the
exterior pathogens, mainly for the exterior syndromes and also for the early
stage of wind edema, skin and external diseases such as sores and carbuncle. 3.2 Emesis It is a therapeutic method to expel phlegm, saliva, undigested food or

in the stomach and the intestines to clear up the stomach and intestines.
3.4 Mediation It is a therapeutic method that eliminates pathogenic factors by way of
mediation or regulation, and is mostly used to treat halt-exterior and
half-internal syndrome. 3.5 Warming The treatment is to warm the middle-jiao, dispel pathogenic cold and help
recover yang, remove obstruction in the channels and collaterals and regulate
the blood vessels by getting rid of cold, recuperating the depleted yang and
activating the channels and collaterals. 3.6 Heat-reducing The treatment removes pathogenic heat and fire. Its
functions are antisepsis, relieving inflammation and reducing fever. 3.7 Elimination 1. Formation of a Formula 1.1 The principle of a formula Principal drug: Treating the cause or the main symptom Assistant drug: Assisting the principal drug; Treating the accompany
