Chinese Medicine Limbs, Joints and Muscles Disorders  

1. Bi-syndrome (Arthritis)

It literally means obstruction, which is channels blocked causing pain, soreness, heaviness and numbness of the tendons, muscles and joins, even red, hot and swelling.

1.1 Etiologies and pathogenesis

Pathogenic wind- cold- damp factors invading

EPF heat invading 

1.2 Differentiations and treatments

1.1.1 Due to wind-cold-damp

(1) wind (wandering)

Clinical manifestations: joints pain wandering 

Treatment principle: dispersing wind and clearing away cold and dampness

Herb formula: Fang Feng Tang

(2) Cold (Severe pain)

Clinical manifestations: Very severe cold pain, aggravated by cold and alleviated by warm  

Treatment principle: dispersing cold and clearing away wind and dampness

Herb formula: Wu Tou Tang

(3) Damp (localized and swollen)

Clinical manifestations: Fixed heavy pain, swelling, greasy fur

Treatment principle: dispersing dampness and clearing away cold and wind

Herb formula: Yi Yi Ren Tang

1.2.2. Due to heat

Clinical manifestations: Hot pain, red swelling, red tongue with yellow fur  

Treatment principle: Dispersing heat and clearing away wind and dampness

Herb formula: Baihu Guizhi Tang

2. Wei-syndrome (Atrophic syndrome)

It is disease of muscles weak and flaccid or atrophied, especially in the lower limbs.

2.1 Etiologies and Pathogenesis

Consumption of fluid due to lung heat

 Invasion by heat-damp

Spleen and stomach deficiency

Kidney and liver deficiency

2.2 Differentiations and treatments

2.2.1 Consumption of fluid due to lung heat

Clinical manifestations: After fabric diseases, the limb weak and even atrophy

Treatment principle: clearing away heat and nourishing yin

Herb formula: Qing Zao Jiu Fei Tang

2.2.Invasion by heat-damp

Clinical manifestations: low limb weak and even atrophy, red tongue with yellow greasy fur

Treatment principle: clearing away heat and dampness

Herb formula: Jia Wei Er Miao Wan

2.2.3 Spleen and stomach deficiency

Clinical manifestations: limb weak and even atrophy gradually developing, tired, short breath, pale tongue body with white fur 

Treatment principle: tonifying spleen and qi

Herb formula: Shen Ling Bai Zhu San

2.2.4 Kidney and liver yin deficiency

Clinical manifestations: limb weak and even atrophy gradually developing , emaciation, night sweating, tired, red tongue body with yellow dry fur 

Treatment principle: tonifying kidney

Herb formula: Zuo Gui Wan
